Over the weekend, I saw a replay of a media interview with a celebrity and I was amazed on how it was handled. As a result, I came up with these tips.
1. Give the media the questions you would like to answer.
2. Know beforehand what the topic of discussion will be
3. Don’t ever try to dodge a media question because it looks bad on the interviewee.
4. Proper response to handle questions you're unprepared for can be the following:
a) You said….(Repeat what they ask you).
b) Respond to a criticism by saying "I never think about it that way, is there anything else you want to say." Wait for their response and then say thank you graciously.
5. Listen attentively so that you can answer the question appropriately. If you are unsure of the question ask the interviewer to simply repeat the question. It is better to ask for clarification and get an understanding what the question is about than answering the question poorly.
6. Give the media what they are asking. If you are unable to supply the answer just say I will get back to you on that. Give them a time you think you will have the answer.
7. At the end of the interview thank the interviewer.
8. Follow up with a thank you note and how you appreciate their time in interviewing you. This is a time you can suggest a follow up or give them some other topics of interest you would like to discuss. That’s a wrap. Hope you find these tips helpful. please let me know. After all, conducting an interview is not that hard as you think. Best of luck :)
